To understand the importance of Nevermore , you must first understand the artist behind it. Marion Elise Ravn was born on May 25, 1984, in Lørenskog, Norway. Alongside her childhood friend Marit Larsen, she formed the duo M2M in the late 1990s. Their debut album, Shades of Purple (2000), went multi-platinum thanks to the irresistible earworm "Pretty Boy," a song that dominated radio stations across the globe.

Marion Raven might not be a household name today, but for millions of millennials who grew up in the late 1990s and early 2000s, her voice was the soundtrack to their adolescence. As one half of the Norwegian pop duo M2M—famous for the global smash hit "Pretty Boy"—Raven was a certified pop sensation before she even turned 18. The primary cause of the shelving, however, was strictly business. At the time of the album's planned release, Eleven Seven Music dissolved its publishing arm, Five Ninteen Productions . Without a publishing arm, the label couldn't legally license the songs or distribute the album properly. The entire project was put "on hold." Soon after, Eleven Seven entered into complex distribution partnerships with EMI and Universal Music Group for specific regions like Canada and Japan. But instead of solving the problem, these mergers created bureaucratic gridlock. The album fell into a legal black hole, trapped between different companies that didn't know (or care) how to handle a Norwegian rock singer's lost masterpiece.
Today, the album has sold over 150,000 physical copies—an astonishing number for an independent gothic metal release. Original pressings of the vinyl now sell for upwards of $300 on Discogs.
Shortly after the album’s release, fans discovered a binary code hidden in the liner notes. When decoded, it revealed a URL leading to a secondary website. Nevermore was intended to be a sharper, more intense album, blending edgy, distorted rock guitars with melodic pop hooks. It was described as having a heavier, somewhat angsty tone compared to her previous work.
The album opens not with music, but with field recordings: rain on a windowpane, the crackle of a vinyl player, and a whispered recitation of the first stanza of Poe’s poem. It sets a cinematic, claustrophobic tone.
