The Ultimate Guide to x360ce 4.x: How to Map Any Controller for PC Gaming

The landscape of PC gaming compatibility changed dramatically with the introduction of , a breakthrough release that transformed how players use generic gamepads on modern operating systems. For years, PC gamers using budget controllers, steering wheels, or older DirectInput flight sticks struggled to play modern titles that exclusively require XInput.

Because Windows treats the virtual peripheral as a real hardware accessory, it effortlessly bypasses the security limitations of modern game launchers. ⚠️ Solving the Alpha 4.10 "Top Window Focus" Bug

: Once installed, you can manage all games from one central application rather than copying files into every new game directory. i x360ce 410 top

If you are using the (Version 4.x default), the virtual controller should be automatically detected by any game that supports XInput, provided x360ce.exe is running (minimized) in the background.

When you launch 4.10 for the first time:

: Through tools like HIDGuardian , it can "hide" your original DirectInput controller so games only see the emulated Xbox controller, preventing "double input" issues where a game thinks two controllers are connected. Top Setup & Optimization Steps The Ultimate Guide to x360ce 4

The most significant leap in the 4.x branch is its shift in architecture. Unlike the v3.x branch, which used a library-based emulation method, via the powerful ViGEmBus driver. This kernel-mode driver allows x360ce to create a highly authentic virtual Xbox 360 controller in Windows, resulting in improved compatibility and performance , especially in newer games that employ advanced anti-cheat or device-checking mechanisms.

When all boxes are checked, minimize x360ce (do not close it) and launch your game. You will experience flawless, top-performance controller emulation.

: High-level system permissions are often required to properly hide/unhide controllers and interact with the virtual driver.

Use third-party utility software to force the application layout to stay anchored as the top active layer. ⚠️ Solving the Alpha 4

Upon first launch, x360ce will detect that the ViGEmBus driver is missing. Navigate to the tab (often blinking red). Click the Install button to automatically install the required virtual gamepad emulation bus.

Lab Setup

You can build your own lab as elaborate as you would like. However, for the purpose of this class, the following virtual machines (VMs) will be used.

WebSploit

Kali + Additional Tools + Vulnerable Applications in Docker containers...

Raven

A vulnerable VM that you will use to perform a full assessment (from reconnassaince to full compromise)

VTCSEC

Another vulnerable VM that you will use to perform a full assessment (from reconnassaince to full compromise)

This video explains how to setup the virtual machines in your system using Virtual Box.

Topology

The diagram below shows the lab architecture with WebSploit Full version, Raven, and VTCSEC. The VMs were created in Virtual Box. It is highly recommended that you use Virtual Box. However, if you are familiar with different virtualization platforms, you should be able to run the VMs in VMWare Workstation Pro (Windows), VMWare Fusion (Mac), or vSphere Hypervisor (free ESXi server).

You should create a VM-only network to deploy your vulnerable VMs and perform several of the attacks using WebSploit (Kali Linux), as shown in the video above. You can configure a separate network interface in your WebSploit VM to connect to the rest of your network and subsequently the Internet. Preferably, that interface should be in NAT mode.
