The idea for "Collision Course" was born out of a chance meeting between Jay-Z and Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda at a music festival in 2003. The two musicians discovered a shared passion for experimenting with different sounds and styles, and soon, the concept for a collaborative album began to take shape. The goal was to bring together the best of both worlds, combining Jay-Z's lyrical dexterity and hip-hop swagger with Linkin Park's aggressive nu-metal soundscapes.
The EP was a fast-paced, intense project, recorded over just four days from July 16 to 19, 2004, at a variety of Los Angeles and New York studios, including the famed NRG Recordings and The Hit Factory. The centerpiece was a live performance filmed on July 18 at the legendary Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood in front of a small, invited audience of fans. This performance was the culmination of the project and formed the core of the accompanying DVD. You can hear the incredible energy of that night in the live versions of these tracks, which often surpass their studio counterparts. The DVD release provided an immersive experience, with over 45 minutes of content including behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the album, rehearsals, and the full live concert.

Jay-Z reached out to Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda. Instead of just showing up to perform existing acapellas over rock beats, Shinoda and Jay-Z decided to enter the studio and completely re-record and re-arrange the tracks. Shinoda took on the role of primary producer, meticulously layering Jay-Z’s vocals over re-recorded instrumentals from Linkin Park’s catalog, while Chester Bennington's soaring choruses provided an entirely new emotional weight to Jay-Z's verses.
