  • Silmaril !new! -

The joy brought by the Silmarils was short-lived. Morgoth (the first Dark Lord) and Ungoliant (the giant spider) destroyed the Two Trees of Valinor, plunging the land into darkness. Morgoth then slew Fëanor’s father, stole the Silmarils, and fled to Middle-earth, setting them into his iron crown [1].

: Even in The Lord of the Rings , their influence remains; the Phial of Galadriel contains light from Eärendil’s star (the sky-bound Silmaril), which helps Sam and Frodo defeat Shelob. silmaril

After the war, the remaining two Silmarils were taken from Morgoth. However, two of Fëanor's sons, Maedhros and Maglor, stole them back. Due to their crimes, the jewels burned their hands. However, because of the many evil deeds Maedhros had committed while trying to fulfill his oath, his hands were no longer clean. The Silmaril burned him with unbearable, agonizing pain. Driven mad by the physical torment and the realization that his life's quest was a failure, Maedhros threw himself and his Silmaril into a deep, fiery volcanic chasm. The history of the First Age culminated in the War of Wrath, the cataclysmic battle in which the Valar of the West finally came to Middle-earth to overthrow Morgoth. They destroyed his fortress of Angband and chained him forever. The last two Silmarils were taken from Morgoth's crown by the herald Eönwë.

Fëanor, in his final moments before death, looked upon the Silmarils and realized he could not possess them forever. His rage was so great that his spirit turned to ash. And so, the lesson of the Silmaril is timeless:

: The Vala Varda hallowed the gems so that no evil creature, nor any "unclean" hand, could touch them without being scorched and withered.

Eärendil sailed into the heavens with his Silmaril bound to his brow, becoming the morning and evening star, a beacon of hope for Middle-earth.
